Visitors to the nursery often comment that it has a nice 'feel' to it, and though incredibly hard to put into words, it certainly does.
Where to find us...
Situated in North Hertfordshire, despite its proximity to the A1 and Letchworth, you really couldn’t wish for a more tranquil spot.
Covering 4 acres, with some open land, we are lucky to have green houses, polytunnels, and plenty of space to grow. Which is just as well with tens of thousands of air plants to look after.
For most of the year they are under glass, but in the Summer, we move them out doors to the dappled shade, where they enjoy the breeze and moist, cooler air.
Nursery Origin...
Pioneer Nursery is named for the ‘Letchworth Pioneers’, responsible for creating the first Garden City.
The Nursery was allocated as the market garden for Letchworth Garden City, nearly 100 years ago, when the town was built as the world’s first Garden City. It was used to grow and house trees and plants needed for the construction of the new town.
Opening Hours:
Monday - CLOSED
Tuesday - Friday (9:30am - 4:00pm)
Saturdays (09:30am-3:30pm)
Sundays (CLOSED)
If you are travelling from long distances it is advisable to check to make sure that we are open in advance, as there are times when the nusery may be closed due to holidays and trade shows.
Plant Area
As well as air plants we have an outdoor plant area with seasonal colour and sought-after shrubs and herbaceous plants.
Open Days
Whilst we are open all through the week, we are closed Saturday Afternoons and Sundays. However, at certain times of year we throw our doors open and host a series of open weekends, which we will always publish on our website, and newsletter.
At these events we offer an even wider selection of air plants than usual, as well as special offers through out the nursery. Light refreshments are available, and if you want something more, there are 2 fine pubs right on our doorstep!
Wildlife
Letchworth is home to one of the UK’s largest colonies of Black Squirrels, we are pleased to say that quite that they are regular visitors to the nursery, and rarely a day goes by where we don’t get to see one.
Our other companions include Badgers, Foxes, Muntjac and of course Tilly and Wilbur, the nursery cats.
